Forty Under 40

AS Utah Business launched its quest to identify 40 of the state's hottest and brightest business leaders under the age of 40, we found candidates with vision, charisma and grit. Each of these nominees and their business ventures dramatize the quality of the state's thriving business landscape. This year marks the third annual Forty Under 40 feature in Utah Business magazine. The result is a glimpse intro the cosmos of Utah's rising stars.
Linda Archibald
Age: 37
executive director Miller Business Innovation Center
As the first director of the Miller Business Innovation Center (MBIC), Archibald helps new entrepreneurs find resources to build lasting businesses. In 1998 she and her sister Bonnie ventured into their own businessa company that averaged over 600 percent growth per year in the first four years. Archibald also worked as a marketing guru for many other businesses before directing the MBIC and growing it from zero to its notable success today. She has taken over management of the Genus Group, "the" grassroots organization for the technology and entrepreneur environment.

Isaac Austin

Austin took over ownership of the new ABA basketball franchise Utah Snowbears in the fall of 2004, putting the organization in order and surrounding himself with experienced people. He has since coached the team to the top spot in the 33-team national league. An ex-NBA star who played from 1991-2002, Austin's goals are to prepare his players for spots in the NBA, and to become the developmental team for the Utah Jazz when the NBA changes to a farm-team system in the future. He played two years for the Utah Jazz and suited up for eight different NBA teams in his professional basketball career.

Bevans brought the concept of computer-driven pre-press to Southern Utah in 1995 and expanded the business to include grand format (billboard-size) printing. Design To Print has printed graphics for companies wordwide, including many Fortune 500 Companies. This year Bevans' company was recognized as one of MountainWest Venture Group's 100 Fastest Growing Companies for the third consecutive year, a first for a Utah printer. Bevans was recognized last year as Southern Utah's Entrepreneur of the Year.

Jeff Bickel

Bickel graduated with a Master's Degree in taxation from BYU in 1993 and started with Pricewaterhouse-Coopers in January 1994. He has assisted in growing the tax practice from five to 18 people during his 11 years with the firm, helping to increase revenue by five times through his efforts in attracting new clients and servicing existing clients. He is also active in many nonprofits, such as the Cancer Wellness House and the Deseret Foundation, and served as vice chair of the Business-to-Business Expo for the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce.

Upon leaving that company he co-founded IntelliChoice, Inc., which provides state-of-the-art law enforcement software to cities, counties and universities across the U.S. The company has grown from a regional to a national base in less than two years.

Randy Cosby

Cosby has been involved in the creation and management of InfoWest with business partner Kelly Nyberg since its inception in 1994. Revenue and profitability set new records in 2004, and in December, the company became the first ISP in southern Utah. Cosby's entrepreneurial spirit started early when in high school he founded SoundFX, where he DJ'd and produced independent dances. While creating InfoWest, he simultaneously founded and managed 32bit.com and DevShed.com, which were eventually sold. Cosby serves on the board of directors for the St. George Chamber of Commerce.

He is a graduate of the Boston University College of Communication and is a recipient of the Golden Mike award from the Southern California Radio and Television News Association, and the Chamber Champion award presented by the Salt Lake Chamber. Dale currently serves on the Board of Governors of the Salt Lake Chamber and is chairman of the Business-to-Business Expo, and of the Giant Step Awards. He is producer and host of "The KJZZ Senior Minute."

He recently launched FlipClick.com to help raise funds for under-funded schools and is chairman of the JKPD Foundation, a non-profit children's education organization.

Erickson left the company for two years to work in the corporate finance division of the Securities & Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. He has since been instrumental in training the staff on SEC rules and regulations, and his unique knowledge of the SEC has been a driving force in the growth of Tanner+Co.

Espenes navigated Infopia through the post dot com era and turned the company around to profitability. Infopia was named the 11th fastest growing company in Utah in 2004 and boasted 2,600 percent growth over five years. Espenes is considered an Internet technology visionary and has attracted $10 million in investments. He earned an MBA from Westminster, was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Norwegian Infantry, is founder and CEO of Xanthon, which he sold in 1999, and is a former trustee and member of the executive committee of UITA.

Dr. Eyring is a colon cancer surgeon who uses innovative approaches to increase awareness about colon cancer screenings. He helped Utah secure federal funding for a major colon cancer awareness campaign and chaired the first Colorectal Cancer Summit in 2003, which brought together physicians, advocates and survivors to discuss strategies for decreasing colon cancer deaths and increasing access to screenings. He has also worked as a chair of the Utah Cancer Action Network and as a member of the American Cancer Society's Community Council.

Aaron Garrity

Garrity co-founded XanGo in November 2002, and in two years the company has grown from 14 to almost 400 employees. Its network of distributors now numbers in the hundreds of thousands. The company recently completed a move into a new 60,000 square foot office building at Thanksgiving Point that will serve as international headquarters. In the decade prior to co-founding XanGo, Garrity served in management positions in the health and nutrition industry. He was responsible for overseeing the successful launch of hundreds of products into the international marketplace.

After a successful career in company leadership in Texas and a three-year period as CEO and president of First Scientific in Salt Lake City, Hales joined the Back to Basics team in 2002 as CEO. In October 2003 he assumed his current role of president and has been instrumental in helping the business manage rapid growth while maintaining outstanding customer service. Back to Basics is a privately held Inc. 500 company that employs 76 in Bluffdale. The company was also selected in 2004 by Ernst & Young as an "Entrepreneur of the Year" recipient under his leadership.

Hui was part of the team that started the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge.

She serves on the board of several startups and on the board of the non-profit organization Interplast.

That venture later turned into MyComputer.com, of which the small-business arm was eventually sold. The large-enterprise arm was renamed Omniture in 2002. James has been directly involved with securing such notable clients as HP, AOL, General Motors and Wal-Mart. In October 2004, Jupiter Research named Omniture "Clear Market Leader." The company was also placed on the Inc. 500 and the Deloitte Technology Fast 500. ASPNews.com also recently added Omniture to its "Top 25 Provider" ranking. James is on the founding board of advisors for BYU's eBusiness center and was past chairman for Governor Leavitt's entrepreneurial committee supporting the Utah Silicon Valley alliance.

He was involved in the start-up of the Young Architects Forum, and is the Chair of the AIA Utah Architecture for Health Committee.

Prior to STSN, he co-founded PHAST Corporation, which became the leading control system in the residential control systems market. He has grown the electrical engineering division to annual billings of $1 million. He's an award-winner who has worked on such high profile projects as the State of Utah Capitol restoration, Utah Olympic Speed Skating Oval, South Towne Exposition Center and The Gateway. He graduated in the top 10 of his class at the University of Utah and is licensed in 30 states. He's a board member of national and international electrical and engineering associations and COO of Spectrum's Higher Education Center of Engineering.
