5 Tips For Email Marketing

Email is powerful and inexpensive marketing tool.  When properly utilized, emailing can be a dynamic means of reaching out to customers and associates.  Here are some tips to help you embark on an effective email campaign.

1. Have a Plan

Perhaps this seems obvious, but it is important to understand that you must have a strategy for your email marketing plan.  A email campaign is a commitment for a small business, and it takes time and effort to do it well.  You can use an email newsletter service, most of which offer free reports containing some helpful information.  By learning to understand these reports, you can use the statistics that they provide to assist you in adjusting your campaign strategies.  for example, if a particular newsletter receives a significant number of unsubscribes, then you should try something new with the next one.

You must also decide what type of email marketing you want to do.  Will you send daily deals or weekly updates and tips?  Perhaps you would rather send a monthly company update with a letter from the President or CEO.  Whatever strategy you decide to employ, it’s important to inform subscribers of your intentions so that they can be certain that they want to subscribe.  You also need to make it easy for people to subscribe to your emails.  The subscription form shouldn’t be too lengthy because people won’t want to fill it out.  Furthermore, you should make it easy for people to unsubscribe from your emails too should they choose to do so; be sure to include an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email.

2. Design It to Fit With Your Brand

Your emails should be consistent with your company’s identity.  Customize them to include your company’s logo in the header, and apply your company’s colors wherever they are appropriate.  If they are congruent with the other aspects of your company’s content, then your emails will seem familiar to your subscribers right from the beginning.

3. Make It Easy To Share

In addition to making it easy for people to subscribe to your emails, you should also make it easy for subscribers to share your emails.  While people might forward your emails to their friends, they are much more likely to share them if it only takes a click.  Consider adding social media links, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus, to your emails so that your subscribers can share them more easily.

4. Give People What They Want

Have meaningful content and be relevant.  Meaningful, relevant content will keep your readers engaged, and they will look forward to your emails instead of marking them as spam, moving them directly to the trash, or unsubscribing altogether.  Also, keep your tone friendly and casual.  A formal, dull email isn’t engaging; it’s tiresome and not worth reading.  Another good idea is to make your emails easy for people to scan.  Your subscribers are busy people, and they probably get a lot of emails.  Breaking your emails into shorter paragraphs and using headings and subheadings will make your content more scannable, which will make your subscribers more likely to look at it.

5. Test It

It’s important to be certain that your email looks good on computers, tablets, and mobile devices.  People will likely be looking at your emails on all of these devices, and depending on the device, the email may display differently.  Thus, do some testing in order to guarantee that your emails display properly on multiple devices.
